After traveling to Toronto, Massachussets, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, the boys from Nichols were looking forward to a game in Buffalo. Nichols came out of the gate strong, and never took the foot off of the gas as they defeated Ridley College (ON) 6-2 to earn its second CISAA League win of the season and its sixth win overall.
Patrick Thompson scored 1 minute into the first period to get the ball rolling. Six minutes later, Jack O'Connor finished a nice 2-on-1 to put the Vikings up 2-0. A few careless plays with the puck allowed Ridley to deadlock the score at the end of the first period at 2-2.
It only took 19 seconds for Nichols to take the lead for good as Ryan Stayner buried a Charlie Stein rebound to start the second period. Nichols found themselves in penalty trouble taking 9 miutes in penalties in the second period which allowed Ridley to get plenty of good looks at the net. Brandon Mueller was up to the task as he made 13 of his 32 saves in the second period alone.
After getting out of penalty trouble in the second, Nichols went to work in the third. Ryan Stayner scored his second goal of the game on a quick 2-on 1. Freshman Nick Smith scored his first career goal 17 seconds later to give Nichols a 5-2 lead. Matt Benedict added a power play goal with under a minute remaining to finish the scoring.
Nichols will hit the road again as they travel to St. Andrew's for a CISAA League game on Friday, Dec. 11. The puck drops at 3:00 in Aurora.
