It had been two weeks since their first game. Exams and Thanksgiving had limited practice to just 4 practices in two weeks. The opponent was to be one of the better teams in New England Prep Hockey, but Nichols came ready to play and earned a 4-1 victory over the Pomfret School in the Berkshire Prep School Showcase. Andrew Poturalski paced the Nichols offense with 3 goals and 1 assist while Brandon Mueller anchored the defense making 27 saves in the game.
The games were structured with two 25 minute halves, and the Vikings came out firing on all cylinders from the opening faceoff. Poturalski scored his first goal of the game on the power play 11 minutes into the first half on a great individual effort. The score in the first would end 1-0 as Nichols outshot their opponent 15-10 for the half.
The second half started much differently. Pomfret came out with a jump in their step and put a lot of pucks on Mueller. However, Nichols weathered the storm and James Randaccio took advantage of a nifty pass from Charlie Stein to give Nichols a 2-0 lead just 6 minutes into the second half. AS the momentum began to gradually shift in favor of Nichols, Poturalski put the nail in the coffin with his second power play goal with just 12 minutes remaining. Pomfret would add a power play goal of their own to close the gap, but Poturalski restored the three goal lead just two minutes later with a shorthanded tally. Nichols outshot Pomfret 30-28 for the game.
Game 2 will take place shortly as Nichols takes on the Brunswick Bruins, a day school in Grennwich, Ct.
