Nichols Win Battle for Buffalo

Nichols School and the Buffalo Regals U18 have never shared the ice in the history of either program...until now. In a game that lived up to all of the hype, Nichols prevailed 3-2 on an Andrew Stein slapshot with 32 seconds remaining.

It wasn't all smiled for Nichols. Just 30 seconds into the game, Tyler Gjurich scored on an Alex Sylvia rebound. The Regals put Nichols on its heels with a physical, up tempo play. With 34 seconds remaining in the first period, Jase Stahlecker scored a power play goal to send the Regals into the locker room with a 2-0 lead. The Regals outshot Nichols 15-6 for the period.

The second period was a different story. Nichols settled down and began to execute. Andrew Poturalski scored 34 seconds into the second period and gave Nichols a spark. Although the period ended with a Regals 2-1 lead, Nichols began to turn the tide by outshooting the Regals 10-4.

The third was an exciting period with the play moving from end to end. Each team had its chances, but it was Andrew Stein who tied the game at 2 when he rifled a slapshot under the crossbar. His heroics would continue with the gamewinner in the final minute. Brandon Mueller earned his 5th win of the season with 26 saves, and Mike Rotolo took the loss for the Regals making 24 saves. It was a great game for Buffalo. Two great teams battled into the final minute.

The Vikings prepare for the Lawrenceville tournament from Dec. 19-20 and the Belmont Hill Tournament Dec. 28-30.

Nichols Steals One at St. Andrew's

Winning on the road is tough Winning at St. Andrew's is rare. The Nichols Boys Prep hockey team accomplished just that as they walked away with a 2-1 victory.

The game was slow and boring, just the way Nichols wanted it. St. Andrews had a difficult time establishing any type of rhythm as Nichols held the defending CISAA champs to just 23 shots. The first period ended with Nichols down 1-0, but there was no signs of panic from the Vikings. Andrew Poturalski scored on the power play and Charlie Stein scored shorthanded, both in the second period, to give Nichols a lead they would never relinquish. Peter Borgesi was strong in net making 22 saves.

The win puts Nichols in sole possession of first place of the CISAA going into the new year. Next up for the Vikings is a home game on December 16. Nichols will take on the Buffalo Regals U18AAA at 7:00.

Nichols Wins Home Opener

After traveling to Toronto, Massachussets, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, the boys from Nichols were looking forward to a game in Buffalo. Nichols came out of the gate strong, and never took the foot off of the gas as they defeated Ridley College (ON) 6-2 to earn its second CISAA League win of the season and its sixth win overall.

Patrick Thompson scored 1 minute into the first period to get the ball rolling. Six minutes later, Jack O'Connor finished a nice 2-on-1 to put the Vikings up 2-0. A few careless plays with the puck allowed Ridley to deadlock the score at the end of the first period at 2-2.

It only took 19 seconds for Nichols to take the lead for good as Ryan Stayner buried a Charlie Stein rebound to start the second period. Nichols found themselves in penalty trouble taking 9 miutes in penalties in the second period which allowed Ridley to get plenty of good looks at the net. Brandon Mueller was up to the task as he made 13 of his 32 saves in the second period alone.

After getting out of penalty trouble in the second, Nichols went to work in the third. Ryan Stayner scored his second goal of the game on a quick 2-on 1. Freshman Nick Smith scored his first career goal 17 seconds later to give Nichols a 5-2 lead. Matt Benedict added a power play goal with under a minute remaining to finish the scoring.

Nichols will hit the road again as they travel to St. Andrew's for a CISAA League game on Friday, Dec. 11. The puck drops at 3:00 in Aurora.

Nichols Comes Back to Defeat Brunswick 3-2

Game 2 of the Berkshire showcase was a challenge for the Vikings. With only 3 hours to recover from their first game of the day, Nichols started slowly, allowing Brunswick to take a 2-0 lead. Sloppy play and a lackluster effort allowed Brunswick considerable time and opportunity in the Nichols end of the rink. Andrew Poturalski gave the team life with just over 2 minutes remaining in the first half, and the game instantly changed. Nichols began to find its stride and take control of the game.

The second half proved to be all Nichols with the majority of the play taking place in the Brunswick end of the rink. Lucas Walsh tied the game with 11 minutes remaining in the game, and Charlie Stein buried a rebound with 4 minutes left to give Nichols a lead it would not relinquish. Peter Borgesi was strong in net for his first start of the season making 15 saves as Nichols outshot Brunswick 30-17.

Nichols will return to action on the road against the Hill School and Lawrenceville this weekend.

Nichols Downs Pomfret in Game 1

It had been two weeks since their first game. Exams and Thanksgiving had limited practice to just 4 practices in two weeks. The opponent was to be one of the better teams in New England Prep Hockey, but Nichols came ready to play and earned a 4-1 victory over the Pomfret School in the Berkshire Prep School Showcase. Andrew Poturalski paced the Nichols offense with 3 goals and 1 assist while Brandon Mueller anchored the defense making 27 saves in the game.

The games were structured with two 25 minute halves, and the Vikings came out firing on all cylinders from the opening faceoff. Poturalski scored his first goal of the game on the power play 11 minutes into the first half on a great individual effort. The score in the first would end 1-0 as Nichols outshot their opponent 15-10 for the half.

The second half started much differently. Pomfret came out with a jump in their step and put a lot of pucks on Mueller. However, Nichols weathered the storm and James Randaccio took advantage of a nifty pass from Charlie Stein to give Nichols a 2-0 lead just 6 minutes into the second half. AS the momentum began to gradually shift in favor of Nichols, Poturalski put the nail in the coffin with his second power play goal with just 12 minutes remaining. Pomfret would add a power play goal of their own to close the gap, but Poturalski restored the three goal lead just two minutes later with a shorthanded tally. Nichols outshot Pomfret 30-28 for the game.

Game 2 will take place shortly as Nichols takes on the Brunswick Bruins, a day school in Grennwich, Ct.
