Nichols Defeats Monroe to Finish 4-1-1

The Nichols Vikings Fall Development Team traveled to Lakeshore Hockey Arena to play the Monroe County U-18 Eagles in its final game of the fall season and came home with a 4-2 victory. The win gives the Vikings a final record of 4-1-1 in the fall.

Nick Smith, who missed the last three games due to injury, was welcomed back as he paced the offense with 2 goals and 1 assist. His linemate Patrick Thompson had 1 goal and 2 assists. Brandon Mueller was a key part of the victory with his stellar play in net.

Nichols broke out to a 2 goal lead in the first half with both goals coming off the stick of Smith. Monroe cut the lead in half, but Nichols responded with a breakaway goal from Andrew Poturalski and a one-timer from Patrick Thompson. Monroe made things interesting when they scored 12 seconds later to make it 4-2, but Mueller and the defense shut the door on Monroe.

Nichols Falls in Game 2 vs Amherst

The Nichols fall team traveled to the Pepsi Center to play game 2 against Amherst but lost its first game of the season 4-2. The game lacked intensity, and Amherst was able to capitalize on many Nichols turnovers.

The first period ended 0-0, and it was as exciting as it sounds. Neither team generated great offensive chances. Amherst finally broke the tie in the second, as the period ended at 1-0. Nichols tied the score 1-1 early in the third on a Jack O'Connor goal, but Amherst quickly regained the lead, scoring two goals on Nichols defensive zone turnovers. With the goaltender pulled, Wilson Vershay was able to bring the score to 3-2, but a stick handling error lead to an Amherst empty net goal and a final score of 4-2.

Nichols will play its final game of the fall on October 25 on the road against the Monroe County U-18. The puck drops at Lakeshore in Rochester at 3:15pm.

Nichols Earns Another Win

With seven forwards, four defenseman and 2 goalies, Nichols dug deep to earn another victory against West Seneca U-18 AAA 4-2. Despite the short numbers, Nichols played an intelligent game to earn the win, managing the ice well and protecting the middle of the rink.

Tom Mediak scored the first goal of the game for Nichols finding the net on a goalmouth scramble while on the power play. West Seneca tied the score five minutes later beating Brandon Mueller on an odd deflection, but Jack O'Connor gave Nichols the lead for good when he converted a Wilson Vershay pass. To add insurance to the lead, Ryan Stayner put one over the glove just 8 seconds later.

The second half of the game was sloppy at times as both teams began to wear down, but Andrew Poturalski finished a beautiful end-to-end rush to put Nichols up 4-1. West Seneca would score with four minutes remaining, but would never threaten the victory. Mueller and Peter Borgesi continued their brilliant play, each giving up one goal in their half of the game.

Nichols will play Amherst U-18AAA at 8:50pm on Thursday night at the Pepsi Center and then will travel to Lakeshore in Rochester to play Monroe U-18AAA at 3:15pm on Sunday. This will be the last two games of the fall season.

Sean Hughes extended the lead to 4-0 when he picked off a pass in the neutral zone and scored on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. Matt Benedict ended the scoring in the second period with 6 minutes remaining to put the Vikings up 5-0.
