Five Nichols Players Selected to NY Development Team

Five Nichols players have been selected by USA Hockey to participate on the NY development team set for St. Cloud. MN. Each district in USA Hockey designates its best players for their age to move forwards and compete for a spot on the National team for their age group. This summer each of these players will be competing with the best players in the country.

Andrew Poturalski, a freshman forward on the junior prep team, was selected as an alternate on the 94 team. Former Nichols student CJ Lampasso has also been selected as a forward for the 94 team.

Current Nichols 8th grader Mason Evans, a defenseman will be competing in the 95 age bracket. Two incoming students were also selected. Eigth graders Wilson Vershay, a defensman, and Nicholas Smith, a forward, will be traveling to St. Cloud with the 95 group.

Good luck this summer!

Coaching Staff Finalized

The 2009-2010 coaching staff has been finalized with the addition of 4 coaches. Any program would be hard pressed to find a more knowledgable and experienced coaching staff than the one at Nichols School.

Scott Hurd, former assistant at St. Francis HS, will be joining the Nichols staff this season. Coach Hurd has been a prominent figure in the Western NY hockey scene for many years, and he will be an integral part of the advancement of Nichols Hockey. Hurd's knowledge of players and player development will be invaluable.

Darcy Brewer returns to the staff for his third year at Nichols School. Before Nichols, Coach Brewer spent time as a coach at the Landon School in Bethesda, MD. His prevous experience with the players will be relied upon as the program ventures in a new direction.

Wayne Clarke, an assistant coach last season, will be working only in the fall. A 1992 draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs and RPI graduate, Coach Clarke brings a great deal of knowledge and perspective to the fall program. He will have a key role in developing the young players.

David Smith will round out the fall staff. In addition to his role as monitor for the health and wellness of NHL officials, Coach Smith has spent many hours training elite hockey players around the globe. He will be a tremendous addition as the fall program ventures to develop more talented hockey players.

Fall Program Announced for 2009

Beginning in early September all boys hockey players in grades 9-12 will be eligible to take part in the Nichols fall hockey program. The fall program will practice twice a week and play approximately 8-12 games in September and October. The focus in the fall will be on skill development, skating and system implementation. We believe the best way to develop young talent is to have a high practice to game ratio. The fall practices/games will be scheduled in conjunction with Nichols fallsport schedules with the intent that many of our kids will continue to play more than one sport at Nichols, which is in keeping with our school philosophy which values multisport student-athletes.
